Kiri Barker took her first creative photograph at the
impressionable age of 16, with a pinhole camera in her homeland of
Tasmania, Australia. The passion
for ‘Painting with Light’ was born and
she studied photography for 5 years – vocationally
and then majoring in photography in a Bachelor of
Fine Arts at the University of
Tasmania. Her study developed skills from
film processing to photograms, from portraiture to
street photography.
Over the years Kiri's portfolio has expanded, especially
while travelling abroad. Influenced by the black and
white photojournalism tradition of the 1940’s – 1970’s,
she has taken inspiration from photographers such as
Bill Brandt, Doisneau, Walker Evans, Klein, Levitt, Paul Strand, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Alfred Stieglitz and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Kiri has also developed her career in marketing and
advertising in the media industry, working for newspapers
in both Australia and Ireland. Understanding the
importance of personal development she has trained
through the Newspapers Society in a Media Skills
Qualification, and graduated from Queen's
University Belfast in Marketing, Advertising and
PR.
